Fix orphaned content

What is orphaned content?

Orphaned content is any post or page on your site that has no internal links pointing to it. This means no other content on your site leads visitors and search engines to that page. Content needs internal links to be findable. Internal links provide visitors and search engines with context about the content and add value to it.

Why should you fix orphaned content?

It is important to fix orphaned content so search engines can find and rank it. Search engines follow internal links to discover new content that they can crawl and index. Orphaned content has no link or only a few links, which signals to search engines that the content is less important. This can impact your ranking in the search results. In addition, internal links help visitors find related content, improving their experience on your site. Fixing orphaned content improves visibility of your content for both search engines and visitors.

How do you fix orphaned content?

  1. Open your WordPress dashboard

  2. Install and activate the Yoast SEO plugin if you have not already

  3. Use the Yoast SEO internal link count feature to find articles with no incoming links

  4. Review the orphaned articles and decide what to do:

    – Delete the article if it is outdated or no longer relevant.
    – Ignore it if the page serves a special purpose, like a thank you page that does not need links.
    – Link to it by adding relevant links from other articles or pages.
